Microsoft's head in the clouds

Microsoft has spelled out moves which, if successful, could mark a change in direction as big as it's famous 1994 about turn, when it suddenly embraced the web.

Its major announcement at the annual Microsoft Professional Developer Conference seems at first sight to be remote from the concerns of most users. A new operating system - Windows Azure - will allow company's massive data centres, which are being expanded at an astonishing rate.
